Older Californians Receive Support for Physical and Mental Health Thanks to $50,000 Grant from Health Net to the Institute of Aging

Spending time outdoors is vital to a good quality of life. It's even more important for those with dementia. The outdoors provides a space for exercise and social interaction, while easing anxiety, depression and agitation.
Health Net gave a $50,000 grant to the Institute of Aging (IOA) to support their new Presidio Enrichment Center patio in San Francisco. The patio will enhance the care plans of their clients with a secure outdoor space in the scenic beauty of the Presidio National Park.
IOA improves the quality of life for aging adults and adults who live with disabilities. This helps them to maintain their health, well-being, independence and stay active in the community. They provide community-based programs so clients can live at home for as long as possible.
"Health Net's support of our work is making a difference in the lives of more vulnerable populations, such as aging adults and adults living with disabilities," said Tom Briody, Institute on Aging President and CEO. "Their partnership helps enable adults to maintain their health, well-being and independence. Together, we continue the work to increase health equity for Californians."
On October 25, 2022, the IOA held a ribbon cutting event to celebrate the new patio and share updates for their dementia support program, Companioa. Wendy Ferguson, Senior Director, Contracting & Network Development for Health Net, attended the event on behalf of our company.
Earlier this year, Health Net announced another effort to support the health of older Californians. It's a new partnership between San Diego State University's Center for Excellence in Aging & Longevity and Wellcare By Health Net. It provides seniors with a holistic approach to navigate the current and new challenges faced by older adults and their families. Central to the partnership is the "Wellness Club." This club is an inclusive, community-based approach to inform, engage, empower and inspire older adults.
Older Californians face many challenges as they age. This ranges from physical and mental health declines to isolation. Health Net helps residents navigate these issues and live their best lives.
